How Gubra combined solar and battery storage to go beyond its own energy needs

When Gubra Green set out to build Spectra, its hybrid solar and battery park, the goal was to cover Gubra's own electricity use and feed the surplus into the grid as additional renewable capacity. When the chance came to upgrade the battery from 2 MWh to 8 MWh, Gubra Green turned to Reel to pressure-test the business case.

Where human health meets planetary health

Gubra is a Danish biotech company supporting the development and testing of new medicines. But the company's mission doesn't stop at the lab. Gubra believes that human health is inextricably connected to planetary health, a belief support by its policy to invest 10% of its pre-tax profit every year into projects that contribute positively to climate and nature, through its dedicated investment unit, Gubra Green.

Spectra, a combined solar and battery park balanced and optimized by Reel, is one of Gubra Green's largest investments to date and an example of how a company can deliver impact within, and well beyond, its own value chain.

Renewable energy as the greatest lever of impact

Electricity is the single largest driver of Gubra's Scope 1 and 2 emissions, a natural consequence of running electricity-intensive lab operations. To reduce its own operational emissions, Gubra decided to build its own solar park - but its ambitions went further than that.

"Switching to renewable energy is one of the most impactful things we can do for the climate. By building a solar park that produces more electricity than we use, we not only cover our own consumption with renewable energy, but we get to contribute additional renewable capacity to the grid in support of Denmark's climate goals."

Solar energy alone raised a familiar challenge: production doesn't always match demand. So, in the early stages of the Spectra's planning, Gubra decided to include a battery, so it could better utilize the solar energy being produced.

"It came down to a simple question: how do we better utilize the solar energy we produce? As a renewable, the sun doesn't always shine when demand is highest. A battery helps solve that by balancing supply and demand, which increases our impact and strengthens the business case."

Since Spectra went live, Reel’s balancing and optimization of the battery has been profitable, strengthening Spectra’s business case and validating Gubra Green's investment thesis in renewable energy.

Choosing the right battery

In the early days of Spectra, Gubra chose a 2 MWh battery for the solar park. But as planning progressed, the contractor building the park flagged an opportunity: battery prices had fallen, and a larger battery could offer a better business case.

Uncertain of the best approach, Gubra turned to Reel to pressure-test the opportunity. Reel helped analyze the financial business, showing how a larger battery could put more of the solar park’s output to productive use and enable participation in a wider range of balancing services. The analysis supported the upgrade, and the battery was scaled up to 8 MWh.

"From the moment we started planning the park until we decided to upgrade the battery, market conditions changed a lot. Throughout it all, Reel helped us maintain a clear understanding of the park and our options, sharing forecasts and expert insight that made it much easier to reach an informed decision on the battery."

Gubra also credited Reel's team for making a complex market accessible: rather than delivering answers without context, Reel took the time to explain the reasoning behind its recommendations, giving Gubra's team a shared understanding of complex data, concepts and energy market-specific language — and the confidence to communicate those decisions clearly to Gubra's board.

"Reel supported us with strong data and market expertise on decisions we needed to make in-house. They've always been flexible and readily available: whenever we had a question, we'd get a short call where things were explained simply. We never felt alone in a complex market. And because I have a Board to answer to, having a partner who can translate that complexity into the few things that really matter has been invaluable."

Looking ahead

Gubra is now onboarding its finance team onto the Reel platform to track Spectra’s production and performance. Gubra Green continues to see renewable energy as a core part of its investment thesis and is actively exploring new opportunities that combine measurable climate impact, biodiversity restoration, and long-term value creation.
