Tscherning – ahead of the power market

Tscherning is a large Danish construction company with expertise in civil engineering, demolition, environmental remediation and construction site services. Its head office is renovated with 89% reused and bio-based materials, and climate targets are set across the group. Tscherning came to Reel for support in implementing an electricity strategy to underpin the transition to a future where a steadily growing share of operations runs on electricity.

Selected 2030 climate goals for Tscherning:

  • 100% electrification of passenger company cars

  • 65% electrification of commercial company vehicles

  • 65% fossil-free construction machinery

A Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) tailored to Tscherning's electricity consumption

Together with Reel, Tscherning began taking a closer look at their electricity consumption to explore which type of power purchase agreement (PPA) would best fit their profile. Reel compared Tscherning's profile against renewable generation hour by hour to see which consumption hours could be covered by solar or wind, and then looked at what the company's future consumption might look like. Tscherning has ambitious plans to shift to electricity across more areas of the business, which means their profile will look different in a few years than it does today.

"PPAs were new to us, and we wanted to understand the market before entering a long-term agreement running over several years. Reel went through our consumption hour by hour and put together the mix of solar and wind that fits how we use electricity."

- Niron Nirmalananthan, Sustainability Specialist, Tscherning

The analysis resulted in two agreements: a ten-year PPA on a new solar park with attached battery storage, and a five-year PPA on wind from an existing wind farm.

The PPAs will also change how electricity appears in Tscherning's budget. The price of electricity bought through the PPAs is fixed up front and holds for the full term of the agreements, which means Tscherning is not exposed to swings in the power market for the share of consumption the agreements cover.

Guarantees of origin count toward the climate accounts

Tscherning's PPAs include guarantees of origin (GOs), certificates showing that the electricity comes from renewable sources. The guarantees of origin can be included in Tscherning's market-based Scope 2 accounting and help meet customer requirements for documentation of renewable energy use.

Companies can also purchase guarantees of origin separately from a PPA to cover consumption not already backed by a PPA's guarantees of origin.

For Tscherning, it was important to do both: to support the development of new renewable generation through a PPA covering 26% of the company's electricity consumption, while using supplementary guarantees of origin for the remaining volume in order to meet customer requirements for documentation of renewable energy.

The future for Tscherning

Tscherning's electricity consumption rose by 30% in a year, and with targets of 100% electrification of passenger company cars and 65% fossil-free construction machinery by 2030, considerably more electricity will be required than today.

"Tscherning was one of the few companies that started looking at their electricity long before they had to. They already know how their own profile behaves, what share to lock in, and what to leave open when consumption climbs in the future. Many companies will be facing rising electricity consumption in the years ahead, and Tscherning is setting the standard for how to approach it."

- Magnus Andreassen, Account Executive, Reel.

About Tscherning

Tscherning was founded in 1975, when Georg Tscherning started the company with a single machine. Half a century later, the family business employs more than 500 people, turns over more than DKK 1 billion, and is run today by his son Søren Tscherning from Tscherninghuset in Hedehusene, a head office renovated with 89% reused and responsibly sourced materials. The group works across civil engineering, climate adaptation, utilities, demolition and reuse, environmental remediation and construction site services, and has reported against the UN Global Compact since 2014. Its targets include a 70% reduction in CO₂ intensity from its own operations by 2030 against a 2018 baseline, and a machine and vehicle fleet that is 65% fossil-free by the same year.
